Description:
Peaceful and hard-working, the Likan is a magical race that receive their energy from the sun. Likans live in sunny meadows, or the vast plains. There they live off the land, trading their crops and other works of craftsmanship for that precious metal they believe to come from the sun. Their skin tones can range from pale pink to darker skin tones, where tan is the most common. Their hair can range from pale blonde, to jet-black. Eye colours can be anything from blue, green, hazel, amber, brown.
Likan have a long strong tail that they can use to grab things with. Their ears are tapered, and often specially pierced with gold accessories, following special rituals such as marriage.
Lifespan:
Female: Child: 0-12 | Adolescent: 12-20 | Adult: 21-300
Male: Child: 0-14 | Adolescent: 15-23 | Adult: 23-300
Height:
1,50m - 1,80m.
Size: Medium
Diet:
Likan are omnivores.
They can Gather bi-products from their domesticated animals, but they also get "milk-like" drinks from oats, beans and other vegetation. They are pretty advanced in their baking, curing, and other techniques to create delicious meals and snacks. Likan also slaughter both domesticated and wild animals for meat.
They don't normally eat raw meat, and many plants are inedible for them, unless they're domesticated vegetables.
Racial Magic:
Likan are born with a crystal inside their chest, which is charged by being out in the sun. This crystal has a 300 years long lifetime, and as the sun charges it, any excess energy is stored in the veins of the Likan, and can be expelled as magic. Likan commonly use their magic as a healing power, though this light elemental magic can be used offensively as well.
It should be noted that if a Likan uses up their reserve magical energy(mp), they can continue healing or attacking, but it would be by using their own personal energy (hp). This can be very dangerous and Likan advice against this.
If a Likan is depraved on sunlight for long enough, their crystal will struggle to keep up. They will become fatigued, melancholic, and if deprived for too long, they will die an unnatural death, leaving a corpse. Something seen as horrific to the Likan.
Earthly Domain:
Likan live on the western side of the major continent. They share this with the Toimendos, and whichever other species has come to live in their territory. Thrin is their capital city.
Areas they frequent:
Likan are known to wander, it is possible to find them living in colder climates, seasonally. Likan avoid areas with little sun, due to their dependency on sunlight. They tend to migrate to the equator during winter, before spreading outwards again during the summer.
Society:
Likan live in matriarchal societies, as the gender ratio of girls to boys born, is 80% to 20%, respectively. Men used to be expected to devote their lives to their wives and raising the children. In present days, men are not as pressured into marriage as before. Many have careers, that they keep even after they get married. Women, being more plentiful, does many of the tasks, mostly outdoors and in craftsmanship. They are also expected to get married, but then return to the work-life once they have given birth.
Likan women only carry children, known as a litter, once in their life. They may have as many as 5 children. Three children, triplets, is the most common number, with 1 child being seen as very odd.
Likan women are very often bisexual, losing sexual interest for their husband and focusing their attentions on their wives instead. This romantic interest usually stays however, and its common for three wives and one husband splitting two beds between themselves. This way the husband sleeps next to the newest addition to the polycule.
It used to be very restrictive to be lgbta+ for Likans. Men were completely refused from showing any sign of homosexuality, bisexuality, or asexuality. Women were allowed to be homo, bi, or asexual, once they had carried children.
Living on Shareen however, these restrictions have been lifted and discrimination against people that are lgbta+, has become illegal and is punishable with incarceration.
Birth:
New-born likan are pricked and healed, triggering their crystal to begin its function. It's imperative that the time and date is written down, so the Likan will know when they will pass away.
Halting their aging:
This crystal will freeze the Likan's body and keep them young until their 300's birthday. A Likan's first sexual intercourse with a partner will release the proper hormones for the aging to halt.
If they do not have a sexual encounter with a partner- the Likan will continue to age until they're old and gnarled, before expiring at their 300th birthday.
Note:
No, it's not important how the encounter went. Unless it's important as a detrimental event in your character's life(ex, if they were abused as a child and look young forever now. Or they are sex-averse and still went through it, leaving a bad memory in your character's past). Unless you want it noted, you don't have to elaborate on it.
What is important is when it took place, as it dictates how old your likan looks. Otherwise they will look their actual age.
Coming of age:
Likan come of age around their twentieth year, which mean they properly begin their puberty. It's when they are allowed to chose which ispher they wish to be devoted to, on their own. This is celebrated with a big communal party, where the parents bake small cakes for their children. Inside the cake is a small (safe) box in the center. It holds a pendant, with a stone in the colour of the child's preferred ispher to worship. They're also given their first prayer candle (not hidden in a cake). This celebration is for both genders, and there's no difference in the outfit that's made this event. It's unisex.
Marriage and bonding:
Likan practice polygamy. One man will marry a woman, have children with her, and then the couple will marry another woman, with whom the man has another litter of children, and then the trio will marry another woman. It usually stops after the third wife, so there's four in the relationship. But it's not seen as odd for likan to have up to 5 spouses.
Both husband and wives must agree and desire the woman they wish to add to their family, as the wives will become lovers while the husband focuses on the new wife. Once the family feels they have born enough children, the spouses will share one common bedroom where they will all sleep and have their love-making.
Death:
On the dot, 300 years later, the likan will pass away, their crystal going out in a flash and the Likan themselves becoming white dust which travels up into the clouds. The family will celebrate the death, by reminiscing about the deceased likan's life and accomplishments, drinking and dancing.
Likans whose crystal is broken while in their chest, will wither to dark dust, as opposed to their natural death. This dust will fall to the ground, and many worry that the Likan will be unable to reincarnate.
Alliance:
The Likan try to keep Maremis and Toimendos as their allies, hoping the alliance will keep war at bay. But they also benefit from the craftsmanship of Maremis, and the knowledge of the forest from the Toimendos. In return, Likan keep animals and farm the fields, thus contributing their share to the relationship. On Shareen, the Likan have also made efforts to allying with the Konac, a before-thought to be dangerous species.
Religion:
Likan still give thanks to the sun, but has shifted most of their love to the ispher Nananli, who symbolize life and light. But there's also love to give to the other isphers.
Overall, Likan worship the isphers, and have personal altars in their homes, religious items for personal use, give offerings in form of prayer, tears, love, and food. They go to temples and shrines on special holidays to further show their devotion.
Crystal Devotees:
A small religious branch that sprouted up after the Likan were transported to Shareen.
They worship a Likan woman encased in crystal. This woman is Malo, who gave her life to seal away a great evil.
However, the devotees are unaware of this, as well as the knowledge that this crystal was gifted to them by the Zaevende, who wished not to be worshipped by the people of Shareen. Instead they found the Heroine Malo, and found that she had not decayed in the ages since her passing. So they encased her in crystal and gave her back to the Likan, initially hoping simply to allow them to keep their Heroine.
Malo stands in a temple, with devotees coming to visit and touch the base of her crystal to recieve blessings.
Now if they do or do not receive blessings, one might never know.
Reproduction
Likan woman have their periods 4 times a year, usually when the seasons change.
Two Likan, male and female, are needed for reproduction, where copulation takes place to release semen into released into the womb.
Once pregnant, the mother is cared for by the others, but the chance of a spontaneous abortion is 0% unless she is fatally wounded. Aether in her, will crystallize and form a new crystal which the fetus grows around, embedding it into their chest.
The gestation period takes up 8 months, and upon birthing, the ovaries are rejected by the body and released out along with the newborns.
Likan can have as few as one baby, and an extreme maximum of 8. The norm is twins, or triplets. It's considered abnormal to only have one child.
Skin, hair, and eye colour is passed down, however some genes are stronger than others.
Darker skin tones tend to have a greater chance of being passed down. If a very pale likan and a very dark likan mate, the child will have a skin tone between the two, not completely pale, but not completely dark. Darker skin tones tend to be more common.
As for eye colour, the colours have a range, and in this list, the top ones are more dominant than the lower ranked ones:
-Dark blue
-Dark green
-Amber/gold
-Grey
-Brown
When it comes to hair colours, some tend to be more dominant than others. The top ones on this list is more common, with less common ranking lower:
-Blond
-Red
-Brown
-Black
Likan female names are made from combining or altering existing words in their language. Likan may have middle names if they wish.
Ex: Tanto, meaning hope and wish, can be used as inspiration to make Thoden.
Likan last names are carried on by the women in the family, taken from the matriarch and passed down to daughters and unwed sons. A last name is created by taking the name of the first recorded matriarch. That, or they take a word that represents what their family stands for.
In the marriages with more than one partner, it's the last name of the first wife that is given to all new wives, and husbands.
In the event of same sex couples, they will combo the last names, w/w and m/m.
